Yen Press licenses Honobu Yonezawa’s award-winning novel Black Dungeon Castle – News

Hyōka the author’s historical mystery 2021 won several prestigious awards

Yen Press announced Monday that he has a licensed mystery writer Honobu Yonezawa‘with Black Dungeon Castle (Kokurōjō) novel, and will publish it in print and digital form in June 2023. Yen Press describes the novel:

Winter 1578, four years before the Honnnoji incident. Araki Murashige has betrayed his ally Oda Nobunaga and gone into hiding in Arioka Castle—but a series of strange incidents within the castle walls is driving him to his wits end. The desperate warlord’s only hope of solving these mysteries is locked away in the castle dungeon: a man named Kuroda Kanbei, one of Oda’s most gifted strategists. When all the conflicts and scheming come to an end, what will Murashige and Kuroda have up their sleeves?

Yonezawa and Kadokawa published the novel in June 2021. The novel won the Naoki Award (biennial Japanese literary award for new and emerging authors), and won KadokawaFūtarō Yamada Award 2021. It is also ranked #1 in the Mystery ga Yomitai!, Shūkan Bunshun Mystery Top 10, Kono Mystery ga Sugoi!and Honkaku mystery top 10 guide for 2022 and is the first to rank #1 in all four charts. It took first place in the Rekishi/Jidai Shōsetsu Best 3 (Historical/Periodical Novels Best 3) Awards of Asahi Shimbun‘with Asahi Weekly magazine in 2021.

Yonezawa is perhaps best known for his Kotenbu (Classic Literature Club) started a series of novels Hyōkafirst novel, 2001. The Credit Roll of the Fool (Gusha no Endroll) novel followed in 2002. Sequence of Kudrjavka (Kudryavka no Junban) in 2005, A doll that went astray (Toomawari Suru Hiyoko) in 2007, Approximate distance between two people (Futari no Kyori no Gaisan) in 2010 and Imasara Tsubasa or Iwaretemo in November 2016

Kyoto animation and the late director Yasuhiro Takemoto adapted some of the stories in the series into a 22-episode television anime series titled Hyōka 2012. The novels also inspired the manga in the Kadokawa‘with Per month Shōnen Ace magazine.

Yonezawa wrote Shōshimin a series of mystery novels that had several manga adaptations, including Anko Manjūya‘with Shunki Gentei Ichigo Tart Jiken (Case of Spring Limited Edition Strawberry Shortcake).
