Persecution of José Abreu, rumors of Kodai Senga, future of Jorge Alfaro

The offseason is only a few weeks away, and the latest rumors indicate that the San Diego Padres will make several big moves this winter.

Having re-signed pitchers Nick Martinez and Robert Suarez, who were instrumental in the Padres’ magical run to the NLCS, general manager AJ Preller can afford to focus on other needs for the moment.

With a pushy executive like Preller pulling the strings, San Diego will be tied to seemingly every big-name free agent that fits the team’s needs and spending budget. That would certainly explain why the Padres have emerged as players in the shortstop market with stars Carlos Correa, Xander Bogaerts, Trea Turner and Dansby Swanson all available to sign.

Let’s take a look at some other relevant San Diego news fans should know about before the holiday weekend.

  • The Padres’ rivals in the NL West are also eyeing big splashes. Aaron Judge was spotted in San Francisco for a free agent visit with the Giants, who are shaping up to be the biggest threats to the Yankees in the pursuit of Judge.
  • After losing Tyler Anderson to the Angels, the Dodgers are reportedly in contention for reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander. Los Angeles has also been linked to Aaron Judge, and those rumors apparently aren’t going anywhere after the club didn’t draft former NLCS MVP Cody Bellinger this week.

That’s all we have…for now. The Giants and Dodgers have plenty of spending money this offseason, so it can guarantee a few more stars joining the NL West. However, the Padres will have something to say about it.
