Governor Sanwo-Olu Extends Political Consultation to Community Markets and Traders –

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has extended his ongoing political consultation to markets and the trading community across the state.

The Governor on Tuesday met all the market leaders in Lagos under the auspices of the Nigeria Commodity Market Women’s and Men’s Association. The meeting was held at the Alausa residence of its General President, Folasade Tinubu-Ojo.

It was the second time in three months that Sanwo-Olu would meet with the market leaders. The Governor was accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Special Adviser on Local Government and Community Affairs, the Hon. Bolaji Roberts, State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi, and the director general of the APC Governors Campaign Council, Senator Ganiyu Solomon.

Sanwo-Olu, who described the traders as “important stakeholders” in state governance, said the visit was part of his broad consultation ahead of the general election, noting that interaction with informal sector traders was strategic for get to the bases

The Governor reassured market leaders of his administration’s commitment to their well-being and requested their full cooperation in supporting the APC in the upcoming elections.

He said: “Market leaders and their members are important stakeholders in the governance of Lagos. We interact with them from time to time and consult with them on issues related to the growth of our markets. We have come here today to thank you for your continued support of our Government and to encourage you to remain loyal citizens of the State.

“This place has been a strategic meeting place for discussion with market leaders on sociopolitical issues. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged from this very house and was sworn in as the Governor of Lagos in 1999. Since then, this building has been the meeting place for all the leaders of the Lagos market. Today’s visit is to reassure the market men and women of our commitment to their well-being and to ensure that we have their full cooperation in supporting the progressive party.”

Sanwo-Olu told the traders that the government had accelerated the ongoing work to complete all the markets currently being built.

The Governor announced the continuation of credit subsidies to 100 micro and small businesses in each market throughout the State, noting that the intervention had empowered many women and low-income households to meet their needs.

Sanwo-Olu, according to a press release signed by its Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, took the opportunity to share in the benefits of good governance reaped by the state in education, transportation and health, among others, noting that the programs of his administration was focused on improving the lives of residents, regardless of their income and status.

The Governor said: “We are in the season of politics and we find it necessary to meet with our people in the market and request their support in the upcoming general elections, especially for our presidential candidate, gubernatorial candidate and other offices that our party is running for.

“This is an important step, you are part of the crop of people who diligently wait in the voting booths to cast votes for our party. We cannot take you for granted, despite having new people on the electoral roll. We need to commit and talk to you about our plans. In this case, we seek your support for all of our candidates in general.”

The merchants, in the course of the discussion, raised issues that affect them and advised the State Government on possible areas for improvement and collaboration.

Iyaloja General Tinubu-Ojo assured the governor that market leaders continue to support the party and vowed to mobilize members of their households and communities to vote massively for APC in state and federal elections.
