Tips for Following a Healthy Alkaline Lifestyle

Figuring out what constitutes a healthy diet can be very difficult, as new information is always being published that seems to refute the benefits of eating various types of foods. While some people recommend living a healthy alkaline lifestyle and claim that it will help to make your body more alkaline and thus less likely to develop any number of health problems, including low bone density, high blood pressure, cancer and diabetes, the premise of the diet is sometimes challenged as not being backed up by science. The argument is that the food you eat only affects the alkalinity or acidity of your urine, not your blood or other tissues. However, the diet itself is actually pretty healthy, so there’s no harm in following it for most people.

Increased Consumption of Fruits and Vegetables

The main recommendation of this diet is typically to eat more fruits and vegetables, which is great because most Americans don’t eat enough of these foods. Fruits and vegetable consumption has been linked to many of the health benefits claimed by proponents of alkaline diets, so dietitians usually recommend filling at least half of your plate at each meal with these nutritional powerhouses. The one caveat is that people who have to watch their blood sugar levels may have to go easy on the amount of fruit they eat.

Whole Grains Over Refined Grains

Another recommendation is to limit refined grains and choose whole grains instead. This is also in line with what most nutrition professionals recommend because whole grains provide more nutrients, including beneficial fiber, which is another thing most Americans don’t get enough of in their diets.

Avoid Processed Foods

Processed foods tend to be higher in sugar, salt and fat than is recommended and lower in fiber and nutrients, although some of these foods are fortified with added vitamins and minerals. It’s better to buy whole foods and cook from scratch which makes it easier to keep meals healthy since you have more control over the ingredients.

Monounsaturated Fats

One of the healthiest types of fat is monounsaturated fat (along with the omega-3 fat found in seafood), so the recommendation of the alkaline diet proponents to use olive oil for fat and include nuts as part of your healthy diet are right on track.
